The Montessori Approach
Child-centered Learning
Montessori education focuses on the individual needs and interests of each child. Children are given the freedom to choose their own activities within a prepared environment, fostering independence, curiosity, and a love of learning from an early age.
Hands-on, Experiential Learning
Learning in a Montessori classroom is hands-on and sensory-based. Children engage with specially designed materials that encourage them to explore and discover concepts through active, concrete experiences, which helps them build a deeper understanding.
Development of the Whole Child
Montessori education emphasizes the development of the whole child—intellectually, socially, emotionally, spiritually, and physically. The approach nurtures respect, self-discipline, and collaboration, while promoting growth in academic, social, and practical life skills.
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a religious education programme for children, based on Montessori principles, that focuses on fostering a deep, personal relationship with God. It uses hands-on, experiential learning to help children explore and understand key aspects of the Catholic faith, particularly through scripture, liturgy, and prayer. The program is designed to respect the spiritual potential of each child, offering them a peaceful, prepared environment—called the atrium—where they can grow in their knowledge and love of God at their own pace.
Who was Maria Montessori
Maria Montessori was an Italian physician, educator, and innovator, best known for developing the Montessori method of education.
Her approach is characterized by the use of specially designed materials, a focus on sensory-based and self-directed activities, and an emphasis on respecting the natural development of children. Montessori believed that education should be tailored to the individual needs and potential of each child, allowing them to explore and learn at their own pace.
